Definition

A Damp Proof Course (DPC) is a continuous, horizontal layer of waterproofing material (such as rich cement concrete mixed with waterproofing chemicals, or a bituminous sheet) laid just above the ground level or plinth. Its sole purpose is to prevent soil moisture and groundwater from rising up through the brickwork via capillary action.

Practical Example

Before the bricklayer begins erecting the ground floor walls on the foundation plinth, the team casts a 50mm thick band of water-resistant M20 concrete across the entire wall footprint. This DPC band ensures that during the monsoon, the walls will not absorb water, preventing paint peeling and structural decay inside the finished home.

Application in Superwise

DPC is an explicit, payable item in the structural BOQ. Superwise helps Project Managers isolate DPC activities within the Gantt scheduling tool so that subsequent masonry work is physically blocked until the DPC task has been signed off and inspected via digital Quality Control checklists.
