Unlike nominal mix concrete (which relies on fixed volumetric ratios like 1:1.5:3), Design Mix Concrete is precisely engineered in a laboratory. Engineers test the exact properties of the locally sourced cement, sand, and aggregate, and calculate the exact mathematical proportions by weight required to achieve a targeted compressive strength (e.g., M40 or M50).
For the construction of a metro rail pillar, nominal mix is not safe enough. The contractor hires a testing lab to create a "Design Mix" for M50 grade concrete. The lab report specifies that to achieve this high strength, exactly 400kg of cement, 700kg of River Sand, and 1200kg of 20mm aggregate must be batched together with specific chemical plasticizers per cubic meter.
Within Superwise, the Procurement and QA teams log the approved Design Mix ratios into the system. When producing concrete at the on-site batching plant, Superwise tracks the exact weight of raw materials consumed, alerting the PM if the plant is deviating from the approved, safe design mix proportions.
