Definition

An Overhead Water Tank (OHT) is a permanent storage structure located on the terrace or elevated columns of a building. Water is pumped from underground sumps up into the OHT. Because it sits at the highest elevation, it provides constant, reliable water pressure to all the floors below via natural gravity, without requiring electricity to run booster pumps continuously.

Practical Example

During the design of a 20-story residential tower, the MEP consultant calculates the daily water requirement for 100 families. They instruct the structural engineer to design a massive RCC Overhead Tank on the terrace capable of holding 50,000 liters. The roof slab structural design must be significantly reinforced to safely carry this immense dead weight of water.

Application in Superwise

Constructing an OHT involves highly specialized waterproofing tasks. In Superwise, the Gantt schedule separates the OHT casting from standard roof work. Specialized waterproofing sub-contractors are assigned, and the QA module mandates a "72-hour ponding test" checklist to verify the tank is absolutely leak-proof before the plumbing contractor is allowed to connect the down-take pipes.
