Definition

X-Ray Testing (Radiographic Testing) is a highly critical Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) method used primarily in massive steel structures (like bridges or skyscraper frames). Specialized technicians shoot X-rays directly through a newly completed thick steel weld onto a photographic film. Any internal cracks, gas porosities, or lack of fusion—which are completely invisible to the naked eye—appear clearly as dark spots on the developed X-ray film.

Practical Example

Before a massive steel bridge girder is hoisted off the ground, the QA/QC inspector orders X-Ray Testing on the primary splice weld joining two 50mm thick steel plates. The film reveals a massive internal void hidden deep inside the weld. The welder must grind out the entire defective section and re-weld it to prevent the bridge from snapping under heavy traffic loads.
