Definition
In Indian civil engineering practice, an Abstract of Estimate is the final summary page of a detailed architectural or structural estimate. It condenses hundreds of line items into broad categories (e.g., Earthwork, Concrete Work, Masonry, Woodwork) by multiplying the total quantity of each category by its respective rate.
Practical Example
After a Quantity Surveyor calculates the detailed foundation volumes, wall areas, and steel tonnage for a new school wing, they prepare an Abstract of Estimate. This 1-page document shows the school board that Civil Works will cost ₹50 Lakhs, Plumbing ₹10 Lakhs, and Electrical ₹15 Lakhs for a total project budget of ₹75 Lakhs.
