Definition

Extruded Polystyrene (XPS) is a specialized, dense foam insulation board recognized by its smooth surface and typical blue or pink color. Because its closed-cell structure is inherently waterproof and possesses a brilliant low U-Value, XPS boards are widely laid directly over roof terraces and exterior cavity walls in premium green buildings to drastically reduce the transmission of solar heat into the concrete structure.

Practical Example

To achieve a Platinum Green Building rating in sweltering Chennai, the architect rejects cheap fiberglass insulation. Instead, they specify a 50mm thick layer of rigid XPS Insulation directly beneath the final terrace tiles. The dense blue foam blocks the intense tropical heat from ever reaching the concrete roof slab, drastically lowering the top-floor apartments' Air Conditioning load.

Application in Superwise

Insulation is often structurally hidden within walls or beneath floors after completion, making post-facto verification impossible. Before the contractor is allowed to cover the XPS boards with final plaster or screed, the Superwise mobile app forces the site supervisor to photograph the installed blue boards. This creates permanent QA evidence that the expensive insulation was genuinely utilized.
